East Kalimantan-based coal miner PT Anugerah Bara Kaltim (ABK) produced a total of 3.6 million tons during the January-September period, a company official told Petromindo.Com on Thursday.

The Company is on track to meet this year’s production target of 5 million tons, despite unfavorable weather, the official said. The production from January through June reached 2.5 million tons. Last year, the company produced 4.2 million tons of coal.

The company said that starting early this year, its new coalmine Gerbang Daya Mandiri, which is located near Samarinda, East Kalimantan or about 20 kilometers from ABK”s current mine, has strated its production with 40,000-50,000 tons of coal per month, the official said. For next year, the company plans to boost its coal production to around 6 million tons, the official added, without further elaborating.

The official said that the firm’s sales contact with Taiwan’s power firm Taipower had expired. “ We will participate in the next ( coal supply) tender to be held by taipower,” the official said. ABK has hired mining contractor PT Pamapersada Nusantara to handle most of its mining activities. The company sells most of its coal under long-term contracts with South Korean power firm Kosep and buyers in Taiwan, Japan and India.
